Members of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh UK in Croydon held a Parliament Week event with a debate on EU membership and a mock election, joined by the Mayor of Croydon and the Civic Mayor.

The Croydon Branch of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (UK) successfully organised a UK Parliament Week event at Coombe Wood School. Around 60 participants attended. The event welcomed several distinguished guests, including the Civic Mayor, the Worshipful Councillor Richard Chatterjee, the Mayor of Croydon, Jason Perry, and Councillor Nikhil Thampi.

Young Members Debate UK’s Relationship with the EU

To open the evening, younger members held an engaging debate on the motion: “Should the UK rejoin the EU?” The debate set an energetic tone for the rest of the event. It also encouraged critical thinking and political awareness among participants.

Afterwards, members took part in a simulated election. This gave everyone practical, first-hand insight into how democratic processes actually work.

Showcasing Hindu Contribution to UK Society

The event also featured a presentation on the Hindu community’s contribution to UK society. The presentation highlighted the rich cultural and civic impact Hindus have made across Britain. A further quiz and presentation on how the UK Parliament works helped deepen everyone’s understanding of British democratic institutions.

Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh UK Welcomes Local Civic Leaders

Mayor Jason Perry answered questions on how civic bodies function, offering specific insight into the workings of Croydon Council. The Worshipful Mayor, Richard Chatterjee, spoke about how Parliament operates and stressed the importance of involving young people in political life. Councillor Nikhil Thampi praised the discipline shown by Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (UK) members in Croydon and expressed confidence in the bright future of its young people.
