Exploring Hindu Values Through Art

On 5th June, the Aylesbury Branch of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (UK) organised a creative poster competition based on the theme “Depicting Dharma Through Art.” The initiative encouraged children, young people, and adults to explore aspects of Hindu heritage and express their understanding through creativity and visual storytelling.

Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (UK), commonly known as HSS (UK), is a voluntary cultural and community organisation that promotes personal development, family values, community service, and active citizenship across the United Kingdom. Through regular cultural and educational activities, HSS (UK) provides opportunities for families to learn about and engage with Hindu and Indian traditions while contributing positively to wider society.

Exploring the Meaning of Dharma

The competition encouraged participants to reflect on the meaning of Dharma and how it can be represented through art.

Dharma is a broad concept within Hindu philosophy. It can refer to living according to principles of righteousness, responsibility, ethical conduct, compassion, and harmony. Rather than being limited to religious practice, Dharma can influence how individuals approach their responsibilities towards themselves, their families, their communities, other living beings, and the wider world.

Participants were encouraged to go beyond simply creating an attractive poster. Each submission was accompanied by a short explanation covering three key areas:

1. The meaning and subject represented in the artwork.
2. The inspiration behind the chosen theme or design.
3. The central message the participant wanted to communicate.

The competition received an enthusiastic response, with 24 original submissions from members of the local Hindu community. The participation of both younger and older members demonstrated the broad interest in exploring Hindu values through creative expression.
