Raksha Bandhan Celebrated in Rugby Branch of HSS (UK) with Mayor of Rugby, Barbara Brown
Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (UK) promotes community engagement and the values of Seva (selfless service), Sanskar (values and character), and Sangathan (unity) through its local Branches across the United Kingdom.
The Rugby Branch recently celebrated Raksha Bandhan (festival celebrating the bond of protection) in Rugby, welcoming distinguished guests including the Mayor of Rugby, Barbara Brown, representatives from the emergency services, and community guests Mr Ramesh Srivastava and Mrs Manjuben Srivastava from the Rotary Club.
Raksha Bandhan is a festival that celebrates the spirit of protection, care, and responsibility towards one another. The programme included a thoughtful explanation of the significance of the festival, delivered by one of the young female volunteers.
During the presentation, the meaning of the words Raksha (protection) and Bandhan (bond or tie) was explained. While the words literally translate to “protection” and “tie”, together they represent a deeper message — a vow of protection and responsibility towards one another. Traditionally, a Rakhi (sacred thread) is tied on the right wrist as a reminder of this promise. Over time the thread may fade, but each year the vow is renewed as the festival is celebrated again.
Guests and participants also joined in the Branch’s traditional warm-up exercises and team games, experiencing the energetic and inclusive atmosphere of the branch activities.
As part of the celebrations, Rakhi were tied to all the guests as a gesture of appreciation and respect. In a symbolic expression of gratitude to those who protect the community, Rakhi were also tied to the fire engine and police vehicles present at the event.
The celebration provided a meaningful opportunity to share the universal message of Raksha Bandhan — strengthening bonds of trust, appreciation, and protection across communities and cultures.
