Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh UK (HSS UK) is a voluntary, cultural organisation dedicated to inspiring individuals to serve society through the Hindu values of Seva (selfless service), Sanskar (values and character), and Sangathan (unity). Through its weekly local branches, known as Shakhas (local gathering or centre), HSS UK provides structured activities that promote personal development, community spirit, and civic responsibility for people of all ages.

Tejasvi Shakha, one such branch based in Coventry, marked the festival of Raksha Bandhan (the sacred bond of protection) with a special visit to the Canley Fire Station to honour and thank local firefighters for their service.

Raksha Bandhan (the sacred bond of protection) is an important Hindu festival that celebrates the values of protection, duty, and mutual respect. Traditionally, a Rakhi (sacred thread) is tied as a symbol of a promise to protect and care for one another. The festival reflects key Hindu values such as Seva (selfless service), gratitude, and recognising those who dedicate themselves to the wellbeing of society.

To mark this occasion, Swayamsevaks and Sevikas (male and female volunteers) from Tejasvi Shakha visited Coventry’s Canley Fire Station to tie Rakhi to local firefighters, expressing their appreciation for the vital role firefighters play in protecting the community.

This visit builds upon a long-standing relationship between the Shakha and the fire station, strengthening community ties and promoting mutual understanding. Firefighter Matt warmly welcomed the group and provided an informative overview of how the station operates and responds to emergencies, giving families valuable insight into the dedication and preparedness required in their service.

Following their return from an incident, the firefighters kindly spent additional time engaging with attendees. Families were introduced to the fire engine, shown various pieces of equipment, and given the opportunity to ask questions. This interaction helped develop awareness, reduce fear of emergency situations, and foster respect for the courage and professionalism of the firefighters.

Swayamsevaks and Sevikas also had the opportunity to experience operating the fire engine’s water hose under supervision, making the visit both educational and memorable for all involved.

Raksha Bandhan serves as a reminder of our shared responsibility towards Raksha (protection) and the importance of contributing positively to society. Celebrating this festival with community heroes such as firefighters reinforces the Hindu values of Seva (selfless service), respect, and gratitude, while inspiring the next generation to serve society with dedication and compassion.
