MAR 2018 – Despite the challenging weather conditions caused by Storm Emma and severe snowstorms, the fields of Abbey Park in Leicester were transformed on Saturday, 3rd March, into a vibrant celebration of Holi. Around 1,000 brave souls gathered to partake in the festivities, embracing the spirit of unity and diversity. The theme of the event was “Embracing Diversity, Celebrating Unity,” as the snow-covered park was soon covered with bursts of colours from the Holi powder, turning it into a beautiful sea of red, blue, orange, green, and yellow.

Yoga and meditation sessions took place, allowing people to relax and centre themselves, aligning with the philosophical aspects of Holi. Talks focused on the deeper significance behind the festival, highlighting the themes of love, togetherness, and the triumph of good over evil. Exciting plays were staged, narrating the stories behind Holi, while spirited dance performances added to the jubilant atmosphere.

One of the event’s key objectives was to emphasize unity—what connects us rather than what divides us. The celebration wasn’t just about the colours or the fun, but a deeper reminder of our shared identity as Hindus. Hot food added warmth to the occasion, further enhancing the communal experience.

HSS (UK) Leicester took the lead in organising this non-profit, public, and Dharmic celebration, with 15 Hindu organizations from across the city coming together. Notable participants included ISKCON Leicester, Art of Living Leicester, and Brahma Kumaris Leicester, all of whom contributed to making this Holi a success.

The planning and execution of the event followed the principles of the Hindu Management System, which focuses on consensus-building, equal participation, and collective decision-making. This approach helped ensure the success of the event, with all involved aligning with the final decisions for a unified effort.

The celebration of “Anekataa Mein Ekataa” (Unity in Diversity) resonated throughout the day, reinforcing the idea that despite our differences, we are united in our shared heritage and values. This event has sown the seed of a collective future where the Hindu community in Leicester can work together in harmony, proactively and meaningfully, for the betterment of all.

Sangathan Mein Shakti Hein (Strength in Unity).
