HSS (UK)’s Carshalton Branch Celebrates Raksha Bandhan with Emergency Services
The annual Raksha Bandhan celebration hosted by HSS (UK) Carshalton Branch, brought together community members and local emergency responders in a vibrant display of unity and service.
Raksha Bandhan is a traditional Hindu festival that celebrates the bond of protection and care between individuals, symbolised by the tying of a decorative thread known as a rakhi. While it historically marks the relationship between brothers and sisters, the festival has evolved to represent mutual responsibility and community solidarity more broadly.
This year’s Utsav was made particularly special by the joint attendance of representatives from the Fire, Ambulance and Police services. For the first time, all three emergency services were present together at the event. Children were delighted by the flashing lights and sirens, while adults welcomed the opportunity to meet and thank those who serve on the frontline.
The Ambulance Service further strengthened community ties by offering to deliver a first aid training course for members, reflecting a shared commitment to public safety and preparedness.
Carshalton Mahadev Parivaar Shakha operates as part of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (UK), a nationwide voluntary organisation focused on personal development, community service and the promotion of Hindu culture and values. Through regular shakhas — structured weekly gatherings — HSS (UK) encourages individuals and families to cultivate self-discipline, teamwork, leadership skills and a spirit of service, while contributing positively to wider British society.
In expressing their gratitude to the emergency service teams, organisers noted that their presence embodied the true spirit of Raksha Bandhan — protection, care and selfless service. The event served as a powerful reminder of unity, safety and mutual respect within the community and beyond.
