Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (UK) continues to promote the values of Seva (selfless service), Sanskar (values and character development), and Sangathan (unity) through its local Shakhas (weekly community branches). As part of these efforts, Rugby Branch recently organised a special Shikshak Vandan Diwas (Teacher Appreciation Day) programme led by the youngsters .

The event, held in Rugby, was attended by 92 participants, including 10 teachers from several local schools. The programme was organised by the young Swayamsevaks and Sevikas (male and female volunteers) to express gratitude and respect for their teachers.

On arrival, the teachers were warmly welcomed with a traditional Namaste greeting and a Tilak (ceremonial mark on the forehead) by their students and parents. The guests then participated in a range of engaging activities on the field alongside the students.

Following the outdoor activities, all participants gathered in the main hall where the programme formally began with the lighting of a Diya (traditional lamp), symbolising knowledge and enlightenment. This was followed by a recitation of Guru Vandan (a prayer expressing reverence to teachers) in Sanskrit, with its meaning explained in English. A short talk highlighted the importance of the Guru–Shishya (teacher–student) relationship, a respected tradition in Hindu culture that emphasises guidance, respect, and the sharing of knowledge.

The cultural segment of the evening included a vibrant dance performance by the participants. The Kishor and Kishori also spoke about the HSS (UK) motto Swayameva Mrugendrata (through self-effort one becomes a leader), which appears on the HSS (UK) logo, and explained the organisation’s guiding values of Sanskar (values), Seva (selfless service), and Sangathan (unity).

A particularly touching moment came when the teachers were invited to the front by their students, who delivered heartfelt speeches expressing their gratitude and appreciation. Many of the teachers were deeply moved by the sentiments shared.

The evening concluded with light refreshments for all participants. Teachers shared very positive feedback, appreciating the thoughtful programme and the opportunity to experience the cultural values of respect, gratitude, and learning that the event sought to promote.
